Extra Credit Part 1 (24 points max)
Choose ONE (1) of the following:
A) Character Roles - There are countless archetypes in the steampunk universe, so it is not surprising that I didn't list them all. Find another set of character archetypes that I haven't mentioned yet. Tell me about them, and, if you can, come up with an example of where they would fit in within the steampunk environment. 200 words minimum.
B) The Picture and the Posture - This is your chance for some creativity! Take a steampunk gadget--it doesn't have to be from the lesson--and either illustrate it OR write a short, creative blurb about it (can be a journal entry with you as the gadget's inventor...or, you know, something else, surprise me!). You can mix and match gadgets if you'd like. At this point, I'm giving you free reign to play with steampunk toys. 200 words minimum for written work.
Please make sure to upload your pictures on an image site like Photobucket, Imageshack, or Tinypic, as I will not be opening attachments.
C) Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy? - Solve the mysteries! Below are four different scenarios. All of the crimes have a culprit at the end of the mystery. Identify the culprit and what type of steampunk archetype he or she--or they--is/are. Please supply a reasoning for your identifications. Each prompt is worth 6 points.
ONE
The body of a socialite was found in the library's restricted room. After numerous witness interviews, Detective Inspector Feldyng narrowed the suspects down to four: two scholars (Rita and Ali, respectively) who have access to all parts of the library, and the other two--Darrow the toymaker and Silvia the locksmith--with the skills to get in if necessary. When Feldyng examined the crime scene, he found that the locks had been broken into. Rita did mention that Ali was absentminded and had lost his keys a few weeks back. But the detective inspector wasn't keen on believing Rita entirely; after all, she'd tried to clean up the crime scene before the police arrived. Fortunately, Feldyng managed to salvage pieces of gears hidden beneath the corpse. It looked like they had been part of a complicated contraption.
TWO
Attending the ballet was a social highlight of the Season, and Lira was determined to dazzle everyone there. She even found the most perfectly exquisite--and expensive--necklace to don her elegant neck. When she arrived, she met with old friends and rivals. On the way to her seat, the dashing Mister Costermont greeted her with a kiss on each cheek, his warm hands lingering on her shoulder. Lira almost giggled when she saw the jealous looks shared by Lady Marbury and her sister, Verity. Still, they remained polite enough when both sisters gave her a quick peck on one cheek. Verity even commented on her necklace. Upon leaving the theatre, Lira put her hand on her neck, gasping in surprise. She stopped so quickly that she collided with Alfred, the playwright and philosopher. He hurried on, but had halted when he heard Lira's shriek. "THIEF!" she said aloud. Her necklace was gone.
THREE
A demonstration at the local academy about increasing the efficiency of amber as a fuel was so popular that even the infamous showed up for it. There was the pirate captain Sharon Victoria, the dangerous, derringer-toting bounty hunter, Aurora Gaigna, and Milly and Molly Grimble, twin radical reformers. Unfortunately, there was a commotion within the academy, causing a cancellation of the event halfway through. Apparently there was a break-in at the academy vaults, and all the amber had gone missing. In its place were a couple of pamphlets that demanded people should stop using amber fuels altogether. "Stone fuel is an outright detriment to the society!" The pamphlets were signed under Captain Victoria's name, but she has been adamantly denying writing them. "That darn bounty hunter's the one who's obsessed with amber!" she argued.
FOUR
Discarded automata is an illegal offense in the city of Pernata. When one of them turned up in a ditch, the inspector immediately swept local shops and clocktowers in search of those people who were missing automata. Unfortunately, that narrowed things down to Pierson Brash, a careless mechanic who's been known to discard automata before; Dr. Hamish O'Dreary, a mad scientist with a penchant for making and breaking things; Evelyn Clive, a renowned sufragette; and Lady Allison Beaufort. Upon examining the broken automaton, it was found that the replica was that of a female, and it had been programmed to be an efficient cook. Pierson had only one comment after being duly accused of the crime. "Did you look at the make? That thing's worth more than my yearly salary! You're clearly barking up the wrong tinker, mate."
